Relating male-female relationship dynamics to productivity in the workplace may initially seem a stretch, even though we all know how motivation and morale are affect by how people get along in any environment. Dr. John Gray, of Mars Venus fame, puts it down to brain chemistry. Healthy brain chemistry leads to better relationship dynamics, which in turn leads to greater effectiveness and productivity. The thing is, the process is not automatic. However, once the dynamic is known, individuals or businesses can design in activities or systems to support the best of brain chemistry outcomes.

Dr. Gray’s studies led him to understand that in order to stimulate certain hormones, we need a combination of doing what we need for ourselves along with receiving input from others we work and relate with. In this day and age of potential for labeling something as sexist because it treats males and females differently, we must be clear that brain chemistry is equal opportunity. In a similar way, equal opps was taken to ridiculous extremes that lead to installing the same number of stalls in male and female restrooms. The reality is, Read More→

Labor Day is now past and more than anything seems to mark the end of summer and start of autumn, school and chilly evenings.  We rarely pay tribute anymore to the value of labor well executed, a job artfully done in skill and craft, attention to detail, meeting customer needs and delivering all this in a spirit of goodwill. This whole approach is a mainstay of the American enterprise spirit; one which forged our historic beginnings and still carries us today at least in pockets.

These characteristics are also key facets of entrepreneurs, who in growing numbers are the creative and economic generators of our society.   As I’ve been out and about teaching this summer I noticed that in the face of pressures to be more efficient and productive for economic reasons, the most successful  approach to productivity is Read More→

Creative Leverage of Emotions in Negotiations

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

In our Mastermind group last night we reviewed the book Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate by Roger Fisher & Dr. Daniel Shapiro .  Brendon Burchard then gave a brilliant overview of 10 hallmark aspects of extraordinary negotiations. Underlying all is the recognition that relationships  should always supersede the deal. Embrace these ten things along with thinking and creativity tools to leverage the information,  and your negotiating experience and outcomes will more likely to be successful to the fullest extent of the word.

10 hallmarks:

• Presence-real ,attuned emotional availability
• Passion-feeling deeply for what you, as a negotiating group, are working towards which may be bigger than what you, representing your group’s interests alone, want
• Patience-respect other people’s deadlines as well as the unfolding of the process
• Caring-empathy with the other’s identity and position, even if not their view
• Purpose-what’s the overall purpose you are there for , remembering relationships Read More→

You know the old adage,  “if you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got.”   It takes both imagination and some amount of courage to go where none have gone before….or at least where you have not gone before. Even if after the fact we say, “Duh, what took ya so long?!”   We (that’s the ‘royal we’) talk about learning from our mistakes and accepting responsibility for the consequences of our actions, but when risk is present that involves both ours and other peoples’ money, reputation or future circumstances, then due consideration is warranted. And, then, fore-warned and fore-armed, we take the plunge. And sometimes the unintended consequences are better than we could have foreseen! Here’s one example.

“There is one aspect of your mission statement that is more important than all others: your core values.

Core Values Still Count

In an ever-changing world, core values remain constant.

Core values are NOT descriptions of the work you do or the strategies you employ to accomplish your mission. Rather, your values underline your work, how you interact with others, and which strategies you use to fulfill your mission. They are the basic elements guiding how you go about your work. They are the practices you use every day in everything you do.

Your Core values should: Read More→

What Is a Mission Statement and Why Do You Need One?

Mary Ellen Tribbey  discussed in her post today the Mission Statement for Working Moms Only, her new site that shows working mothers how to ‘have it all’ and still have a life:

“Our mission is to supply the tools that can give EVERY working mom the ability to lead a healthy, wealthy, and more balanced/blended lifestyle. To create a community where millions of working moms from all over the world come together in support and celebration of each other.”

“It’s simple and it’s sincere. And everyone I do business with gets it – point blank.

Many entrepreneurs make the mistake of not taking the time to craft a mission statement. If you do not have one, I urge you to write one immediately.

Once you do so, you will find that Read More→
